The Mountain Medics Difference
We’ve worked hard over the last eight fire seasons to provide the highest standard of care in our industry. We take time to hire, train and support our employees. We work a little differently than other medical contractors in fire; we do not “mass hire” hundreds of contract employees and work down a “call list” for assignments, and we don’t hire contract employees looking for “one-off assignments.” Instead, we prefer to put the time and energy into hiring and training exactly how many employees we need for the season. Our dedicated employees can expect to work anywhere from 30 to 100+ days in one season.
Communication is Key
To be successful in this industry and at this company, you need to have very good communication skills. This job takes a very resourceful individual that can work in the austere environment for 14+ days at a time, and you also need to be able to maintain good communication with your partner, division, Med Unit Leaders, field supervisor, and administrative team. We put a lot of trust in our employees to keep us updated on their assignment location, status of their vehicle and equipment, and nature of the calls they are running. There are a lot of moving pieces during the season and details can get lost in the shuffle. The best way to stay out of trouble and in good standing is to over communicate.
Training and Education
We invest in our employees, and want to see them become absolutely proficient in their roles. We require in-person attendance to our annual Fireline EMS Refresher course. Over the 4 days of the course, you will learn all about the fire industry and your role as a medical provider on the fireline. You will become familiar with the equipment we use: 4x4 ambulances, mobile medical units, mobile treatment centers, UTVs, rope rescue equipment, cardiac monitors, radios, maps, etc. We want you to be prepared for your first day on the fireline, and take pride in your equipment and the care you provide.
Working Alongside Real Leadership
Chad McCall is boots on the ground at this company. He has 20 years of experience as a fireline paramedic and nurse. He’s seen just about every scenario that can play out while working on a wildfire. He’s on a first name basis with nearly every long-timer in the industry and it’s not uncommon for him to lace up his boots and jump on a rig for the day. He will be your boss, your co-worker, and even your friend. He’s a wealth of knowledge and we are lucky to have him leading us.
